 My
grandfather (on the far left) at Taupo - Thomas Rickit, Tame Taima, or
"Pa" as we called him. Born 1895 died 1979. The boat
was owned by Stan Gillies who is standing in it. It was called the
"Luvon" after Stan's two daughters Lucy and Yvonne. The
picture was taken on the Waikato River, the outlet to Lake Taupo, at a
place where there used to be a number of boatsheds. The other guy is
an American who was working in Stan's Garage as a mechanic.Pa and Stan were great mates and used to hunt and fish a lot together. The picture was taken between the first and second world wars. Stan contracted blood poisoning from an injury to his hand that he received on the boat and died - Penicillin was not available in New Zealand till around the beginning of the second world war. |
